Annual St. Louis de Marillac Mass and Luncheon
This years annual Mass and Luncheon was something special indeed!
The Mass and Luncheon was held March 11 at St. Ignatius Church. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Carl F. Dianda, Spiritual Director of the Washington, D.C. Ladies of Charity; and was assisted by Deacon Clark Glenn. At this mass ten Junior Ladies of Charity were received by Fr. Dianda and Mary Beth O’Brien, LCUSA Presdient. These young ladies have begun their work by visiting nursing homes, having birthday and valentine parties for seniors and families who live in shelters.
President O’Brien spoke to the assembly of the many changes in the picture of volunteer work. There are approximately half as many volunteers today and twice as many volunteer organizations.
As a member of Charolic Charities Presient O’Brien visited New Orleans and viewed the devastation from the hurricane and observed that it will be some time before the area is habitable for the people who wish to return. There is so much work yet to be done, as many areas have no water, sewerage, or electric power. Even if there are some jobs available there is no place for workers to live.
President O’Brien also discussed the LCUSA Strategic Plan for the futue of the organization. Strategic planning offers the opportunity to decide what we intend to accomplish. The organization must explore and plan to meet the challenges of how to benefit those we wish to serve. The issues of direction and strategy need to be disccused.
These 10 young women are certainly a great part of our future and we welcome them to the Ladies of Charity.
